Registration

As a new parent or leader in Troop 615, your first step is to be registered with the Boy Scouts of America. Contact Scott Diener or Dave Lubowe for the necessary forms. You must register before attending any of the following training, if you want credit for that training.

Fast Start

Troop 615 recommends that all parents complete the Boy Scout Leader Fast Start orientation course online.

Youth Protection

Every family in Troop 615 is required to have one adult who is Youth Protection Trained. This one and one-half hour course is required to cover the youth protection policies of the Boy Scouts of America; you must have completed YPT before you can drive Scouts to an outing and participate as a leader. YPT must be renewed every three years.

Youth Protection Training is available live every month at these LDS centers. The training is free, and no registration is required - just show up. Plan to arrive about 15 minutes early to sign in, since once the presentation begins, no one will be admitted. You must stay for the entire presentation to become certified and receive your signed and dated Youth Protection card.

You can also take the Youth Protection Training Course online, but if this is your first time, we recommend that you attend the live training. We hope to present YPT at the parent meeting on April 7th 2008.

Assistant Scoutmaster Training

To qualify for the "Trained" patch, and before you can become an Assistant Scoutmaster, the following classes are required:

  • Youth Protection Training as described above
  • New Leaders Essentials.  (Some of you may have completed this class as a Cub Scout Leader)
  • Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training, and
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

See the web pages for training offered by the Orange County Council and by Saddleback District (of which we are a part). Please follow this very important adult training program, and help us have the best trained leaders so that our boys can have the best possible program!

The next available Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills pair of courses are on Saturday March 22nd, and Friday April 11th to Saturday April 12th respectively. See the attached flyer and course descriptions, and ignore the incorrect November 2007 date in part of the flyer!

Training Calendar

Here is a calendar showing the training offered in Orange County for the next several months. Note that you do not have to attend training in our own district (Saddleback) - you can attend training in any district, though you often need to reserve your attendance in advance.

See also this flyer about more online training, and about becoming a merit badge counselor.

Training Records

Adult leaders should keep the troop informed about the training courses they have taken. This is important so that we can make sure each outing has the right mix of trained leaders appropriate to the planned activities. It also allows us to make sure you get the awards and recognition you deserve! Use the form below to record your skills and training. Just as scouts are required to submit signed blue cards, so adults are required to submit similar proof of class completion. Completed forms and copies of certificates or other proof of course attendance should be given to Scott Diener, or placed in Brett Diener’s mailbox.

Patrol Mentors

Each patrol is assigned an adult Patrol Mentor. The duties of a patrol mentor are:

  • Be familiar with the job responsibilities of the patrol leader.
  • Make sure the patrol has at least one meeting per month. Attend all patrol meetings.
  • Help facilitate planning menus and duty rosters for up coming campouts, at least one week in advance.
  • Advise the patrol leader to ask for advice from the ASPL or SPL when issues need to be addressed.
