How To Participate

We have set up a private Flickr group called troop615, and all of the uploaded pictures are in this group, so they are viewable only by troop families. We have also set up a shared Flickr username as a member of this group; using this shared username, you can easily view and tag pictures without any further effort! The username and password may be obtained from Nick Crossley or Andrew Coulson.

Using Your Own Flickr ID

If you have or want to have your own Flickr user ID, go ahead! If you already have a Yahoo ID, that may be used as your Flickr ID. The basic Flickr account is free; this shows your 200 most recent pictures, and up to 20 MB uploaded per month. A Pro account costs $24.95 per year, and provides unlimited storage, with a 2 GB upload limit per month.

Once you have an account, or if you already have one, you must add Nick Crossley (Flickr user name n_crossley) as a contact of yours, and Nick will add you to the troop615 group, which will give you access to the pictures. To do this, go to your Flickr page, and under the Contacts menu you will find an item People Search. Alternatively, just click directly on Contacts, and the resulting page will also show a search box. Type in Nick's email address ndjc@ncrossley.com. You should find a match, showing Nick's picture and the user name n_crossley. Once you have found the right entry, click on the view profile link just to the right of the picture, and it will show a page about Nick. On the right side of the page will be a link Add n_crossley as a contact. Click on that. In the resulting page, mark Nick as a friend.

Once you have done that, send email to Nick, or to troop615@ocbsa.org, telling us your Flickr ID and asking to be added to the group.

How To Provide Pictures

We strongly recommend that you share all pictures taken during Scout outings and events. If all families participate in this, it will provide a convenient way for us to share photographs, and make it easier for parents to build up slide shows not only for Courts of Honor, Eagle Courts, etc., but also just to show to friends and family!

Currently, all pictures must be uploaded to the Flickr site by Nick Crossley, since he owns the Pro account. We would like this photo site to have all your Scouting pictures. But, as mentioned above, some families want to use the photos for presentations (Courts of Honor, etc.), and so want the highest resolution possible. For that reason, emailing pictures to Nick for uploading is not suitable, other than for just a small number of pictures. A better approach is to lend Nick a CD, DVD, USB drive, or CF, SM, or XD card, or bring in a card to a parent meeting. Nick will normally attend parent meetings with a laptop and card reader to copy your pictures then and there!

Alternatively, you can upload the pictures to Nick's iDisk. First, mount the iDisk using one of the following four procedures:

  • If you are using Mac OS X, choose iDisk from the Go menu, then choose Other User's Public Folder from the submenu. Type the member name of the person whose Public folder you want to open in the Member Name field, then click Connect.

  • If you're using Windows NT or 2000, open My Computer, choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu, then click "Web folder or FTP site." Enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/ndjc-Public? (yes, you do enter the question mark at the end of that string!)

  • If you are using Windows Vista, enter http://idisk.mac.com/ndjc-Public into your browser.

  • If you're using Windows XP, use iDisk Utility for Windows XP. To download iDisk Utility for Windows XP, go to http://www.mac.com/1/idiskutility_download.html, and choose the Windows download.  Once you have installed the iDisk Utility, run it, and click on the tab “Open Public Folder”.  Enter “ndjc” as the user name. You will only need a password to mount the whole iDisk; you need to press the button labeled ‘Public Folder’:

Notice the password field is disabled once you have pressed that button.  You then press Mount iDisk.  A dialog should pop up saying that your iDisk has been mounted successfully.  You are then returned to the iDisk screen above, which you can close.  Next, open ‘My Computer’, and you should see the iDisk mounted on whatever drive it showed in the iDisk utility:

Once you have mounted the iDisk following the appropriate instructions above, open it by double-clicking it, and you should see something like this:

To upload pictures, create a folder with a suitable name, such as Pictures from Rocket Launching.  Then simply drag and drop your full-resolution pictures to this folder. The resulting network copy may take quite some time to complete - just let it run in the background. If you want to zip the images first, that might make it a little faster.

When Nick Crossley sees these pictures, he will copy them to the Flickr account, and delete them from the idisk, making room for new batches.

If you have any questions on this process, send email to Nick.
